Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
