A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
